<p>
In accordance with the request of the Governor of
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, expressed in the annexed copy of a letter
from the Colonial Secretary of that Colony, a box containing
specimens of Gold pieces was delivered in <date when="1862-09">September 1862</date> to
<persName ref="prs:lindley_j">Dr Lindley</persName> who was informed (likewise in accordance with
the Governor's request) that the Crown<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Agents</fw><pb facs="co_60_17/co_60_17_00111v.jpg"/> Agents would defray
any little expenses he might incur in procuring a suitable
case for the security and safe custody of these coins.
</p>
<p>
At the close of the International Exhibition of <date when="1862">1862</date>
<persName ref="prs:lindley_j">Dr Lindley</persName> returned these coins and was paid the sum of
£1.14.0 for expenses incurred by him.
</p>
<p>
The Commissioners of Audit having questioned this payment
and called for the Secretary of State's authority for the
same, I should be obliged if you would furnish me with the
<persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>'s approval of this payment to <persName ref="prs:lindley_j">Dr Lindley</persName>
of the sum of £1.14.0.
</p>

I am desired by the Governor to acquaint you that a
small Box containing the specimen Gold pieces described
in the margin <ref target="#marg1">*</ref> will be forwarded to you by this opportunity
through the Express Office of Mess<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rs</hi> <persName ref="prs:wells_h">Wells</persName> <persName ref="prs:fargo_w">Fargo</persName> &amp; Company,
and I am to request you will deliver these gold pieces to
<persName ref="prs:lindley_j" cert="medium">Professor Lindley</persName>, or to <persName ref="prs:mayne_rc">Commander R.C. Mayne</persName> R.E. (The
Colonial Commissioners at the International Exhibition) in
order that they may be exhibited in the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">British</fw><pb facs="co_60_17/co_60_17_00113v.jpg"/> British Columbian
Compartment at the Exhibition; and I am further to request
that you will be good enough to defray any little expenses
which may be incurred in procuring a suitable case in which
they may be placed both for security and to attract attention.
</p>
<p>
2. The Commissioners will be requested at the close of
the Exhibition to return these gold pieces to you and His
Excellency begs you will kindly cause them to be sold as
bullion and place the proceeds to the credit of the Colony.
</p>
