I am directed by <persName ref="prs:robinson_gf">Earl de Grey and Ripon</persName> to transmit
herewith a Statement showing the Balance due to this
Department on account of Expences connected with the
Detachment of Royal Engineers, <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, amounting
to £2,466.16.7, and to request that you will cause this
sum to be transferred in the Books of the Paymaster General,
to the credit of Army Funds.

I scarcely think we can send this account to <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName>
&amp; ask payment without more information than this letter affords
or than we possess here. The first portion of the account
comprizes Stores supplied to the Engineers in <date from="1858" to="1859">1858/59</date> before
they left this Country, and will be defrayed by <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName>;
but why was it not sent in before? In searching the
correspondence for <date when="1859">1859</date>, I find that claims to considerable
amounts for Stores supplied to the Engineers before they
left England were sent in by the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName>, viz. in <date when="1859-06">June 1859</date>,
£12,143.4. and in <date when="1859-12">Dec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> 59</date> £1136.16.11. and other smaller
sums, wh: [two words obscurred].
One item in the account is £49.19 for Medical Instruments—&amp;
I find that in <date when="1859-07">July 59</date>, <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> were requested at the
instance of the <orgName ref="org:war_office">W.O.</orgName> to pay <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">precisely this Sum</hi> for Medical
Instruments to <persName ref="prs:kirkland_j">Sir J. Kirkland</persName>.
</ab>
<p>
The last portion of the
Account consists of Pay issued to <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Col. Moody</persName> and<pb facs="co_60_17/co_60_17_00368r.jpg"/> the other
officers in <date when="1860">1860</date>. It must be Colonial Pay, and, if so, under
the arrangement then in force it will be repaid by the
Treasury—but we have no information on the subject, &amp; perhaps
the most convenient course in the first instance will be to
shew the Account to some one in <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> &amp; ask privately
if they can throw any light upon it?
