<p><persName ref="prs:sargeaunt_wc">Sargeaunt</persName> informs <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> that <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> is in debt £1289.9.6 to the <orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> for the Colonies and that <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">BC</placeName> has also submitted a bill to the Agents which matures at the end of the next month.</p>

In reply to the enquiry contained in the last paragraph
of your letter of the <date when="1864-06-03">3<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> ultimo</date> I have the honor to
acquaint you for the information of <persName ref="prs:cardwell">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Cardwell</persName>
that the amount overpaid on account of the Government of
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> on the <date when="1864-06-30">30<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> June</date> was £1289.9.6, but
that the <orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> have received from the Colony a Bill
for £6200 which matures on the <date when="1864-08-30">30<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> proximo</date>.

 Under these circẽs I think that we may tell the
<choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> that orders have been given to the Crown
Agents to comply with the requisition contained
in <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Sir Ja<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">s</hi> Douglas</persName>' <choice><abbr>desp<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi></abbr><expan>despatch</expan></choice> of the <date when="1864-04-11">11 Ap<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi>/64</date>,
and also that they have been Authorized to pay
themselves the cost of such requisition out of the
bill for £6200 which matures on the <date when="1864-08-30">30 prox<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></date>.

<p>
It may perhaps be a question whether, as the
Colony is indebted to the Agents the sum of
£1289, and the expected bill does not mature for
nearly 2 months, the present <choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>would</expan></choice> not be a
favorable moment for telling <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName> to
be careful to keep the Agents in funds to meet his
requisitions. Authorize the Agents to repay themselves.
