 an Electric Telegraph across the Company's Territory from <placeName ref="plc:red_river">Red
 River</placeName> to the head of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Frasers River</placeName> or thereabouts.</q> <persName ref="prs:head_ew">Head</persName> asks that the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> <q>permit such an examination.</q> <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> minutes that <q>Of course this should be done.</q></p>

I have the honour to inform you that the Committee of the
<orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> have sent <persName ref="prs:rae">D<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Rae</persName> to Ruperts Land with
a view to ascertaining the Best and most practicable route for
an Electric Telegraph across the Company's Territory from <placeName ref="plc:red_river">Red
River</placeName> to the head of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Frasers River</placeName> or thereabouts. The Committee
are anxious that <persName ref="prs:rae">D<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Rae</persName> whilst he is in the Country may have<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">an</fw><pb facs="co_60_20/co_60_20_00119v.jpg"/>
an opportunity of surveying (roughly at least), the probable
route for a line of Telegraph from the head waters of the <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser</placeName>
to <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New Westminster</placeName>, but they are apprehensive that in making an
examination of this kind without the authority of the Government
of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> may appear to be
assuming rights which they do not possess beyond the <placeName ref="plc:rocky_mountains">Rocky
Mountains</placeName>. The Committee would therefore request that instructions
may be given to the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> to permit such
an examination to be made by <persName ref="prs:rae">D<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Rae</fw><pb facs="co_60_20/co_60_20_00120r.jpg"/> Rae</persName> as a necessary step with
a view to future arrangements.
