I am directed, by Earl de Grey and Ripon, to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that a letter was addressed on the 29th January last to the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, of which a copy is herewith enclosed, to which no reply has been received and I am to request that you will move His Grace the Duke of Newcastle to give such directions, to the Lieutenant Governor, as he may thinkproper proper with a view to insure his prompt attention to the subject referred to in the above letter.

Mr Elliot I suppose we had better, in the first instance, send copy of these papers to Col: Moody for explanation, & if necessary afterwards refer to the GovrGovernor of B.C. as requested. ABd 1 Sepr
I think on the whole (after inspecting the accounts) that we had better request the Governor to procure a report on the subject from the Colonial Treasurer. Col: Moody's account of the matter might be taken to be the [Credits?] claimed in the Royal Engineers' accounts; and I do not believe that we should gain much by any further explanation from him. At all events I would try first the Colonial Authorities, or [assume?] the burthen [here?] of accounting for a demand in excess of what the others admit. Draft to GovrGovernor. TFE 3/9
