I am directed, by <persName ref="prs:robinson_gf">Earl de Grey and Ripon</persName>, to acquaint
you, for the information of the Secretary of State for
the Colonies, that a letter was addressed on the <date when="1864-01-29">29<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
January last</date> to the Lieutenant Governor of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>,
of which a copy is herewith enclosed, to which no reply has
been received and I am to request that you will move His
Grace the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName> to give such directions, to the
 Lieutenant Governor, as he may think<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">proper</fw><pb facs="co_60_20/co_60_20_00282v.jpg"/> proper with a view to
insure his prompt attention to the subject referred to in
the above letter.

I think on the whole (after inspecting the accounts)
that we had better request the Governor to procure a report on the
subject from the Colonial Treasurer. <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Col:<pb facs="co_60_20/co_60_20_00283r.jpg"/> Moody</persName>'s account of the
matter might be taken to be the [Credits?] claimed in the Royal

Engineers' accounts; and I do not believe that
we should gain much by any further explanation from him.
At all events I would try first the Colonial Authorities,
or [assume?] the burthen [here?] of accounting
