<p>
I believe that you are aware of my intention to leave England by
the West India Mail Steamer of the <date when="1864-06-17">17<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> June</date>.
</p>
<p>
I am informed that <persName ref="prs:denman_j">Admiral Denman</persName> leaves England by the same
steamer to assume the command of the squadron in the North Pacific,
and that the <name ref="vsl:sutlej" type="vessel">Sutlej</name> is under orders to proceed to <placeName ref="plc:panama">Panama</placeName> to take him
up to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> is one of the most distant British Colonies,
and the expenses<pb facs="co_60_20/co_60_20_00339v.jpg"/> of the journey there are very heavy. I would beg
leave, therefore, to enquire whether, considering this, it would
be possible to grant me a passage on board the <name ref="vsl:sutlej" type="vessel">Sutlej</name>, which, as I
am informed, proceeds immediately on <persName ref="prs:denman_j">Admiral Denman</persName>'s arrival, to her
destination.
</p>
<p>
I beg to be understood to make this request subject to any charges
which are usual on such occasions.

with the T-y. Enquire (personally) at the T-y: if such is the case;
&amp; if the matter is satisfactorily adjusted inform the Governor
of the apptment &amp; of the time of <persName ref="prs:franks_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Franks</persName>' departure.
