<p><persName ref="prs:fortescue">Fortescue</persName>, in the absence of <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName>, acknowledges receipt of <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>’s despatch in which <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> reports that <persName ref="prs:cox_w">Mr. Cox</persName> <q>is prepared to make an allowance to [<persName ref="prs:cox_w">Cox</persName>’s] Wife at the rate of £60 per annum.</q>

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 74
of the <date when="1863-12-04">4th of December last</date>, reporting that <persName ref="prs:cox_w">Mr. Cox</persName> is prepared to make
an allowance to his Wife at the rate of £60 per annum,<!--<pb facs="co_398_02/co_398_02_00102r.jpg"/>--> and informing me
of the sums which he had already sent to her on this account.
</p>
<p>
For the reasons which<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">you</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_11/rg7_g8c_11_00025v.jpg"/> you have anticipated, the <orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> could
not conveniently be called upon to undertake the management of a private
business of this nature. But I appreciate <persName ref="prs:cox_w">Mr. Cox</persName>'s anxiety to furnish
evidence that he sends his remittances punctually, and I have to point
out that this end can be attained by making them through<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_11/rg7_g8c_11_00026r.jpg"/> the Bank of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B.
Columbia</placeName>, and furnishing to the Governor some certificate from the Bank
that this has been done.
