<p>
I trust that long ere this reaches you, you will have
received a telegram from me announcing the completion of
telegraphic communication between <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New Westminster</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Francisco</fw><pb facs="co_60_21/co_60_21_00311v.jpg"/>

2. My relations with the California State Telegraph
Company are, I am happy to say, of the most satisfactory
description, and by their influence the Eastern Companies
placed their lines at my disposal on the opening day. The
excitement arising out of the assassination of the President
of the United States interfered<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">considerably</fw><pb facs="co_60_21/co_60_21_00312r.jpg"/> considerably with the
telegraphic communication across the Continent.
</p>
<p>
3. The <persName ref="prs:collins_p">Collins</persName>' Overland Telegraph Company are rapidly
carrying on their works towards Russian America. I am giving
them every reasonable assistance in my power.

<p>
4. By mere chance the Cable under the <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser</placeName> at <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New
Westminster</placeName> was laid by me. I had lent my<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Steam</fw><pb facs="co_60_21/co_60_21_00312v.jpg"/> Steam Yacht for
the purpose and was on board as a spectator. The American
pilot engaged to take charge of the vessel was late, so I
undertook to perform the delicate duty. I am happy to say
that it was completed in a satisfactory manner. The California
State Telegraph Company appeared much pleased with the
compliment that was thus accidentally paid<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="co_60_21/co_60_21_00313r.jpg"/> to them.
