<opener><ref type="co_ref">8245, CO 60/22, p. 90; received 24 August

<salute>Sir,</salute>
</opener>
<p>
I have had the honor to receive your despatch No. 14, of
the <date when="1865-03-14">14<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> March</date>, enquiring as to the fate of <persName ref="prs:venables">Captain Cavendish
Venables</persName> who has disappeared from this Colony.
</p>
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">2. I</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00091v.jpg"/>
<p>
2. I enclose a report from <persName ref="prs:brew_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Brew</persName>, Police Magistrate of
<placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New Westminster</placeName> on the subject, and one from <persName ref="prs:good_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Charles Good</persName>,
Clerk of the Council.
</p>
<p>
3. There is not a suspicion of foul play in the matter.
There is almost a positive certainty that <persName ref="prs:venables">Captain Venables</persName>, in
a state of intoxication, has fallen from the wharf at <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New Westminster</placeName>
into the <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Fraser</placeName> and been drowned.
</p>
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">4. The</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00092r.jpg"/>
<p>
4. The peculiar circumstances of the case prevented any
immediate enquiry. His disappearance from this Town was simply
accounted for by his having gone to the island where he laterly
lived. When that supposition proved unfounded, there was still
a probability that he had gone direct to <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName> where money
awaited him, regardless of the articles of small value left on the
Island.
</p>
<p>
5. It would be difficult<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00092v.jpg"/> to speak too highly of the kindness
shown by <persName ref="prs:good_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Good</persName> to <persName ref="prs:venables">Captain Venables</persName> for many months previous to
the disappearance, and I may almost conclusively say, death, of
the latter. I believe that <persName ref="prs:venables">Captain Venables</persName> was entirely supported
at the expense of <persName ref="prs:good_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Good</persName>.
