<p>
I have had the honor to receive your despatch No. 39 of the
<date when="1865-07-08">8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> July last</date>, forwarding copies of a correspondence with the
<orgName ref="org:treasury">Lords Commissoners of Her Majesty's Treasury</orgName> on the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">subject</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00381v.jpg"/> subject of
the proposed increase to the Staff of the Assay Department.
</p>
<p>
2. I may at once state that no alteration has yet been made
in the personnel of the Establishment. The work still continues
to be performed by one Chief Assayer and one Melter, the Staff
authorized in the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>'s despatch, No. 41 of
<date when="1863-07-31">31<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> July 1863</date>. I beg, however, to enclose a Return of the
Amount of Gold assayed during the <date from="1864-01-01" to="1865-09-01">eight months ending 1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi>

show the correctness of <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>'s statement that the
business of the Department would probably be greatly extended
during the present year.
</p>
<p>
3. In obedience to the instructions conveyed in your despatch,
I shall be careful not to incur the additional expenditure proposed
by <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName> and voted in the Estimates for <date when="1865">1865</date>, but should
the amount of<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">gold</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00382v.jpg"/> gold brought to the Government <orgName ref="org:assay_office">Assay Office</orgName> increase
in the present ratio, I shall be compelled to give some temporary
assistance without delay.
</p>
<p>
4. Your despatch does not convey any instructions in reference
to <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>'s proposal that the Assay Department be distinct
and not as heretofore under the nominal superintendence of the
Treasurer. I would beg strongly to recommend that I may be
authorized to carry out<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Governor</fw><pb facs="co_60_22/co_60_22_00383r.jpg"/> <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>'s suggestion. <persName ref="prs:claudet">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Claudet</persName>

five years and has gained the entire confidence of the mining
community. The alteration will entail no additional charge on
the Revenue and I am convinced that the Department will work more
satisfactorily when under the sole superintendence of the Chief Assayer.
