20 November 1865 Sir,

I have had the honor to receive your letter of the 16th instant. You enquire why the small sum of £958.11.4 appears in the Treasurer's returns for the quarter ended 31 March 1865 under the head of "Revenue from Collectors," the amount in previous quarters having beenmuch much more considerable.

I regret that I cannot furnish the required information, but I have the pleasure of stating that the Customs receipts for the first half of the year 1865 were £27,836.14.9 against £26,139.15.5 in the corresponding portion of 1864.

I would suggest, respectfully, that enquiry be made of the Treasurer in New Westminster.

We have not the return of Customs Receipts for the 1st half of this year to which he refers.

In answer to the Treasury letter of the 11th, tell them that Mr Cardwell wrote to ask Mr Seymour who was in this Country whether he could throw any light upon the subject and enclose a copy of his answer. State that an inquiry will be forwarded to the Acting Governor at the first opportunity.
