<p>
I have had the honor to receive your letter of the <date when="1865-11-16">16<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
instant</date>. You enquire why the small sum of £958.11.4 appears
in the Treasurer's returns for the <date from="1865-01-01" to="1865-03-31">quarter ended 31 March 1865</date>
under the head of "Revenue from Collectors," the amount in previous
quarters having been<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">much</fw><pb facs="co_60_23/co_60_23_00342v.jpg"/> much more considerable.
</p>
<p>
I regret that I cannot furnish the required information, but
I have the pleasure of stating that the Customs receipts for the
first half of the year <date when="1865">1865</date> were £27,836.14.9 against
£26,139.15.5 in the corresponding portion of <date when="1864">1864</date>.
</p>
<p>
I would suggest, respectfully, that enquiry be made of the
Treasurer in <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New<pb facs="co_60_23/co_60_23_00343r.jpg"/> Westminster</placeName>.

that <persName ref="prs:cardwell">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cardwell</persName> wrote to ask <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Seymour</persName> who was in this Country
whether he could throw any light upon the subject and enclose a
copy of his answer. State that an inquiry will be forwarded to the
Acting Governor at the first opportunity.
