With reference to my despatch No. 51 of <date when="1866-07-09">9<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date>
I have the honor to transmit copy of a Letter from <persName ref="prs:holmes">Captain
Holmes</persName> requesting me to apply to the Imperial <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> for
 Guns and Equipments for a Volunteer Artillery Corps<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">he</fw><pb facs="co_60_25/co_60_25_00040v.jpg"/> he
has been selected to command.
</p>
<p>
2. It is worthy of remark that no application has been
made to me for pecuniary assistance by any of the several
corps now enrolled. All the men have come forward, purchased
their uniforms and pay a monthly subscription of half a dollar
each towards a Drill Instructor and other necessary expenses
incurred by the Corps.
</p>
<p>
 3. I would propose, should<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Her</fw><pb facs="co_60_25/co_60_25_00041r.jpg"/> Her Majesty's Government accede
to the enclosed application that the Guns and Equipments be
forwarded to <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt</placeName> by one of Her Majesty's Ships proceeding
to the Pacific Station as the expense of freight by any other
means would be considerable.

The Blue Book for <date when="1864">1864</date> mentioned only 63 volunteers at <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New
Westminster</placeName>. I suppose that the numbers must have much
increased since that time.
</ab>
<p>
I suppose that this should be sent to the <orgName ref="org:war_office">W.O.</orgName> for
consideration, and that if we knew enough it might be
recomended, but our information seems to be very scanty.
Perhaps <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Seymour</persName> might be consulted before writing to <orgName ref="org:war_office">W.O.</orgName>?
</p>
<p>
When we do write, it should be with reference to our
letter of <date when="1856-02">Feb. 1856</date> and previous correspondence upon the arms &amp;
stores which were rendered available for rifle Volunteers in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B.C.</placeName>
