 Regarding the British Commander requesting <q>the restitution of a Deserter</q> from the American Commander on <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan Island</placeName>, <persName ref="prs:lennox_hg">Lennox</persName> forwards a letter from <persName ref="prs:hastings_gf">Hastings</persName> and other <q>enclosures</q> related to the <q>subject,</q> emphasizing that <q>amicable feeling[s]</q> were <q>maintained</q> and no blame has been placed on <persName ref="prs:bazalgette">Bazalgette</persName>. 
 Minutes by <persName ref="prs:cox_c">Cox</persName>, <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName>, and <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Buckingham</persName> discuss how to respond to <persName ref="prs:hastings_gf">Hastings</persName>’s letter, which emphasizes that <persName ref="prs:bazalgette">Bazalgette</persName> <q>only requested restitution of the deserter, and did not make a formal demand.</q>

With reference to previous correspondence relating to the
claims made by the Officer Commanding the Royal Marines at <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San
Juan</placeName> upon the Officer Commanding the United States Detachment
on that Island for the restitution of a Deserter, I am commanded
by my <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName> to send you herewith
for the information of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the
Colonies, a letter from <persName ref="prs:hastings_gf">Rear Admiral Hastings</persName> dated the <date when="1867-05-12">12<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
Ultimo</date> N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 49, with its enclosures on this subject,<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">from</fw><pb facs="co_60_30/co_60_30_00024v.jpg"/> from which
it appears that an amicable feeling has been maintained
throughout the correspondence respecting this Deserter, and that
the Rear Admiral considers no blame attaches to <persName ref="prs:bazalgette">Captain Bazalgette</persName>
for having <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">requested</hi> his restitution.

last which brought this little tho' it might have been unpleasant
affair to an amicable termination. See Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rs</hi> despatch 3752. I
 think it only<pb facs="co_60_30/co_60_30_00025r.jpg"/> remains to send the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> &amp; the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">F.O.</orgName> for
information a copy of this letter &amp; such of the enclosures as they
have not already had.

<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">requested restitution of the deserter, and did not make a formal</hi>
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">demand</hi> for him as appears to be assumed in the censure pronounced
upon him by HM's <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice>. This censure was contained in the letter
from this Office to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> dated the <date when="1867-03-22">22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> of March</date> which
is annexed.

<p>
Probably it will be enough to send copies of the present
papers, as proposed by <persName ref="prs:cox_c">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName>, to the Governor and to the
<orgName ref="org:foreign_office">Foreign Office</orgName>.

<p>
The contention that this is <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">not a demand</hi> is not worth
discussing, and the matter being settled now it seems unnecessary to
send on copies. I <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> think we may put by.
