<salute>Sir,</salute>

<p>
I am directed by the Lord's Commissioners of Her Majesty's
Treasury to state, for the information of the <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Duke of Buckingham
and Chandos</persName>, that My Lords have had under consideration the Report
of the Auditor General of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, enclosed, with a
copy of a despatch from the Governor<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">in</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00087v.jpg"/> in your letter of the
<date when="1867-11-12">12<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> ult<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">mo</hi></date>, respecting the claims of that Government for
repayment of a certain portion of the expenses incurred for the
Royal Engineers in that Colony.
</p>
<p>
My Lords have only to remark
that the observations in that report tend further to shew that
the claim made in the Acting Governor's despatch of <date when="1865-11-27">Nov. 27 1865</date>
was based on a misunderstanding of the intention of the arrangement
for apportioning the expenses of the Engineers between the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Imperial</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00088r.jpg"/> Imperial
Government and the Colony.
</p>
<p>
With regard to the 8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> paragraph of the report, referring
to a General Account purporting to shew that up to <date when="1862">1862</date> there was
a sum of £5454-9-4 undrawn or due to the Colony, My Lords observe
that no copy of the account is annexed to the Report, to enable
them to form an opinion on this point.
</p>
<p>
Even assuming that<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">according</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00088v.jpg"/> according to the views of the Colonial
authorities such a sum was really due to the Colony, the claim will
have been satisfied by the payment of £6714-14-11 made to the
Agents in behalf of the Colony in <date when="1866-07">July 1866</date>.
</p>
<p>
Under these circumstances My Lords are of opinion that there
is no occasion for pursuing further the correspondence on this subject.
