<persName ref="prs:milton_j">Milton</persName>, as <q>directed by the Secretary of State for War,</q> requests confirmation regarding the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName>s claim on funds from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName>, for <q>Stores supplied for service of Artillery Volunteers</q> in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>. <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">Blackwood</persName>’s minute explains the reasons for this claim from the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName>, and <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> minutes his approval for referral to the <q>Governor requesting payment.</q> Included documents describe how the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> will pay the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName> and the stores the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName> supplied to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.

I have to acquaint you that this Office has a claim of the
following amount, on account of Stores supplied for service of
Artillery Volunteers, <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> <date when="1866-12-19">19<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi></date> &amp; <date when="1866-12-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
December 1866</date> amounting to £<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">141.1.3</hi>.
</p>
<p>
And I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to request
that you will
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">notify to me your acquiescence or otherwise, in the
correctness of the Claim</hi>, on the receipt of which the
Paymaster-General will be authorized to receive the proper amount of
such Claim.
</p>
<p>
And notice will then be given to you to make the payment
accordingly.

This is the bill for articles supplied to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B.C.</placeName> in pursuance of the
Acting Governor's requisition on the <date when="1866-07-13">13 July last</date>. The bill did not
seem to me to correspond with the requisition, so a private
inquiry was made to the <orgName ref="org:war_office">W.O.</orgName> &amp; a note from a <persName ref="prs:purbrick_j">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Purbrick</persName> has
been <choice><abbr>rec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> wh. I annex by way of explanation. I must say that I
 think the<pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00105r.jpg"/> Official Letter from the <orgName ref="org:war_office">W.O.</orgName> ought to have entered more
fully into the subject—I mean as to what articles had not been
supplied. Probably the Authorities will understand the matter
better than I did, &amp; I hope will pay the bill. Refer to Governor
requesting payment.
