I am directed by Secretary <persName ref="prs:pakington">Sir John Pakington</persName>, to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter dated <date when="1867-07-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> Instant</date>, requesting to be
furnished with information with regard to a claim of £675.2.4 for
stores supplied by the War Department for the service of the Government
of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>; and in reply I am to acquaint you for the
information of the <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Duke of Buckingham<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">and</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00127v.jpg"/> and Chandos</persName> that when the Royal
Engineers employed on the Boundary Survey in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> under
the command of <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Colonel Moody</persName> left that Colony in <date when="1863">1863</date>, the Arms,
Accoutrements and Ammunition with which the party was equipped,
were handed over to the Colonial Authorities of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> by
that Officer. An application was afterwards received from the
Colonial<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Officer</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00128r.jpg"/> Officer requesting that the Colony might be allowed to
retain the stores, on the usual terms, for service of the Volunteers
of that territory viz

Rifles and appurtenances on loan
<lb/>
Accoutrements and Ammunition on payment
<milestone unit="section" rend=".in -6 +0"/>
which was acceded to. A subsequent representation was however made
by the Colony that only sixty sets of the Accoutrements<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">out</fw><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00128v.jpg"/> out of the
133 sets were in such a state as to be made available. <persName ref="prs:pakington">Sir John
Pakington</persName>, under the circumstances, had sanctioned their retention by
the Colonial Authorities, free of charge. The claim has therefore been
made for the value of the Ammunition and the Colt's and Deane's
revolvers &amp;c &amp;c referred to in the enclosures which accompanied
your letter of the <date when="1867-01-02">2<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> January 1867</date>.

The <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName> even now do not refer to their previous letter of
the <date when="1867-04-22">22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> April</date>—4029—a copy of which was sent to the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> for his
guidance, i.e. to shew him the amount he has to pay. Send a copy
of this to <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> saying that probably before the receipt of the
present despatch he will have caused repayment to be made of this
sum of £675.2.4<pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00129v.jpg"/> but if not to do so at once.
