Commissioner <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> Presents her Compliments to the
Secretary of State for the Colonies, &amp; would feel obliged by being
informed where her Husband is now Stationed, and what his present
Salary is, not having heard from him for Many Months, and not
receiving with any punctuality, this year the allowance of £60 per
annum Settled on for<pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00213v.jpg"/> her support, while His Grace the late <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of
Newcastle</persName> was in office and of which <persName ref="prs:cox_s">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rs</hi> Cox</persName> has received but
£14.16.9 this year which appears most unaccountable to her &amp;
leaves her in
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">great distress</hi>.

This is not the first time <persName ref="prs:cox_s">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rs</hi> Cox</persName> has appealed to this office to
obtain her Allowance from her husband. He is a Gold Comm<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> &amp;
Member of Council for <placeName ref="plc:cariboo_region">Cariboo District</placeName>.
</ab>
<p>
In <date when="1862-11">Nov 1862</date> she wrote saying that her husband who had left her &amp;
emigrated to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B. Columbia</placeName> had promised to remit to her 1/2 his
 Salary—but had<pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00215r.jpg"/> failed to do so. Her appeal was sent to the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice>
who was instructed to inform <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> that unless he could refute
the statement that he had left his wife without means of assistance
he must either provide for his Wife out of his Salary or be removed
from his app<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi>.
</p>
<p>
The <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> was again written to on the <date when="1863-07-07">7 July 1863</date> no report
having been <choice><abbr>rec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> &amp; he was told "you will see that <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> does
not trifle with this matter," &amp; will inform <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> that
unless he made his remittances punctually he was to be dismissed.
</p>
<p>
In answer the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> stated that <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> had already made
 remittances to his Wife &amp; that in justice to <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName><pb facs="co_60_31/co_60_31_00215v.jpg"/> he must say he
had always found him a correct, honorable &amp; useful officer.
</p>
<p>
On the <date when="1863-12-04">4 Dec 1863</date> a further despatch reported that <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> had
stated that he was prepared to allow his Wife £60 a year &amp; had
already made some remittances to her on that account.

<p>
<persName ref="prs:cox_s">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rs</hi> Cox</persName> now states that she has only <choice><abbr>rec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> £14.15.9 this
year.
</p>
<p>
As <persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName> has since <date when="1863">1863</date> apparently regularly made his
promised remittances, &amp; possibly he is one of those unfortunate
officers who are in arrear of Salary, I think it <choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>would</expan></choice> be sufficient
to send a copy of the present appeal to the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> to be sent to
<persName ref="prs:cox_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cox</persName>?
