 In reference to <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName>’s despatch claiming expenses owed to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> for Royal Engineers, <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Buckingham</persName> informs <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName> that <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> mistakenly accepted this claim and will not be paying the requested amount. <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Buckingham</persName> transmits letters explaining that <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> has further expenses related to the Royal Engineers and <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Moody</persName> and that <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> is not claiming these expenses. Included documents describe <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>’s expenses for Royal Engineers and discuss <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName>’s expense mistake.

I have received your Despatch No. 19, of the <date when="1867-01-11">11th of January</date>
enquiring about a payment of £9,051.18.1 claimed by the Colony on
Account of expenses of Royal Engineers and admitted by the Board of
Treasury in a letter which was forwarded to you on the <date when="1866-06-07">7th<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">of</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_14/rg7_g8c_14_00069v.jpg"/> of June 1866</date>.
</p>
<p>
I have the honor to transmit to you, for your information, the
enclosed copy of a further letter from <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> dated the <date when="1866-12-22">22nd of
December last</date>, pointing out that the admission of the claim from the
Colony was made in error. The Colonial Auditor, it appears, neglected<!--<pb facs="co_398_02/co_398_02_00249v.jpg"/>-->
to include in his Account the Regimental Pay of the Engineers defrayed
by the Imperial Government out of Army Estimates, and also the Colonial
Pay of <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Colonel Moody</persName> paid to him by the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Treasury</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_14/rg7_g8c_14_00070r.jpg"/> Treasury. These items appear by
the Accounts annexed to <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> teller to have amounted to the
following sums.

<p>
This is more than the amount which previously appeared to be due
from this Country. <orgName ref="org:treasury">The Treasury</orgName> State, that having already paid to the
<orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> the sum of £6,714, they will not reclaim<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">it,</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_14/rg7_g8c_14_00070v.jpg"/> it, but that as
the demand on this Country was made and admitted by an oversight, they
cannot make any further issue on that Account.

<p>
With reference to the allusion in the letter from <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName><!--<pb facs="co_398_02/co_398_02_00250r.jpg"/>--> to
the payment already made by them of £6,714, I transmit for your
information Copies of a correspondence which passed with <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> at
the time when the payment was made.
