<persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName> forwards a report by <persName ref="prs:tiedemann">Tiedemann</persName>, a civil engineer, regarding <q>the line of Road to the Interior of the Colony by way of <placeName ref="plc:bute_inlet">Bute Inlet</placeName>, suggested by <persName ref="prs:waddington_a">Mr Waddington</persName></q> and a memorandum by <persName ref="prs:young_wag">Young</persName>, regarding <persName ref="prs:tiedemann">Tiedemann</persName>. <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName> discusses the current state of infrastructure from <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>’s coast to <q>the Eastern provinces should circumstances require a road to be opened.</q> <persName ref="prs:cox_c">Cox</persName>’s minute recommends seeing <q>previous 3371 from Govr &amp; minutes on it</q> and using <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName>’s despatch as a reference if <persName ref="prs:waddington_a">Waddington</persName> applies again about a road from <placeName ref="plc:bute_inlet">Bute Inlet</placeName>. Included documents discuss the <placeName ref="plc:bute_inlet">Bute Inlet</placeName> route proposed by <persName ref="prs:waddington_a">Waddington</persName>.

With reference to my despatches noted in the margin

I have the honor to forward a Report from <persName ref="prs:tiedemann">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Tiedemann</persName>, a highly
respectable Civil Engineer,<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">on</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00090v.jpg"/> on the subject of the line of Road
to the Interior of the Colony by way of <placeName ref="plc:bute_inlet">Bute Inlet</placeName>, suggested by
<persName ref="prs:waddington_a">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Waddington</persName>. I am not personally acquainted with <persName ref="prs:tiedemann">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
Tiedemann</persName>, but the enclosed memorandum from <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName>, the
Acting Colonial Secretary speaks in his favour.
</p>
<p>
2. We have already more roads than we can make use of to the
gold mines, and I am not<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">inclined</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00091r.jpg"/> inclined to give any further
encouragement to the project of <persName ref="prs:waddington_a">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Waddington</persName>, to which the
papers I enclose relate.
</p>
<p>
3. There are two practicable ways at least now in use which
could serve to open communication with the Eastern provinces
should circumstances require a road to be opened.
</p>
<p>
4. I would beg leave to refer Your Grace to the general report
on this subject<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">by</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00091v.jpg"/> by the Surveyor General transmitted in my
despatch No. 26 of <date when="1868-04-02">2<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> April</date>.
</p>
