I have the honor to forward the monthly reports of the
Magistrates in charge of the several Districts of the Colony.<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">The</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00301v.jpg"/>
The great distance of the <placeName ref="plc:kootenay_region">Kootenay</placeName> from Head Quarters and the
uncertainty of communication deprive me of the opportunity of
reporting to Your Grace from that quarter with any degree of
certainty. I hear however no complaints and am highly satisfied
with the chief constable whom I have left in charge.
</p>
<p>
2. I think that Your Grace will be of opinion that<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00302r.jpg"/> the
intelligence furnished by <persName ref="prs:oreilly_p">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> O'Reilly</persName>, from <placeName ref="plc:yale">Yale</placeName>, and from
<placeName ref="plc:lillooet">Lillooet</placeName> by <persName ref="prs:sanders_eh">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Sanders</persName> is highly satisfactory. It really
seems as if <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> is to become a settled Colony at
last instead of a mere gold field with an unattached population.
</p>
<p>
3. I add a Report respecting the agricultural resources of the
Colony furnished me by <persName ref="prs:cornwall_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cornwall</persName>,<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">one</fw><pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00302v.jpg"/> one of our most
enterprising settlers.
</p>

All these reports are exceedingly encouraging, and shew that a
great deal of land has been preempted—&amp; that there are good
hopes of permanent settlement.

<p>
The land is most productive, Crops abundant, &amp; but little Crime.
</p>
<p>
 Acknowledge with satisfaction &amp;<pb facs="co_60_33/co_60_33_00303r.jpg"/> Copy to L<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> B<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi>. There is much information which might be extracted from these reports
which would be a valuable addition to the next Colonization
Circular.
