<persName ref="prs:briggs_jh">Briggs</persName> transmits a letter extract from <persName ref="prs:hastings_gf">Hastings</persName> describing <q>the state of Affairs at the Church Mission Station of <placeName ref="plc:gingolx">Kincaulitt</placeName> at the mouth of the <placeName ref="plc:nass_river">Naas River</placeName>.</q> <persName ref="prs:cox_c">Cox</persName>’s minute suggests thanking <persName ref="prs:briggs_jh">Briggs</persName> for the letter. <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName>’s minutes relates why public departments should not be thanked for forwarding reports. The included document describes <persName ref="prs:porcher_ea">Porcher</persName>’s investigation of disturbances among the Nisga’a at <placeName ref="plc:gingolx">Gingolx</placeName>.

transmit herewith, for the information of the Secretary of State

Hastings</persName>, dated the <date when="1868-08-10">10 Augt</date> N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 135, relative to the state of

I have a strong general objection to thanking public Departments
for any reports they forward<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="co_60_34/co_60_34_00051r.jpg"/> to us for information.

<p>
In the first place it is their duty, and therefore they deserve
no thanks.
</p>
<p>
In the second place to write a letter to thank them wastes their
time and ours.
</p>
<p>
We never fail to send to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> and all other Offices any
Colonial report which concerns them, and we expect no thanks.
</p>
<p>
I think that the letter should be put by.
</p>
