Referring to my letters to you of <date when="1868-04-09">9<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> &amp; 23<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> April last</date>, I
have the honor to enclose for the information of his Grace the
Secretary of State for the Colonies copy of further
correspondence between the Colonial Secretary of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British
Columbia</placeName> and the Manager of this Bank at <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>, respecting
the overdrawn account of the Colonial Government with the Bank.
</p>
<p>
My letter to you of <date when="1868-04-23">23<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> April last</date> enclosed a copy of a letter
to our Manager at <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>, dated <date when="1868-04-16">16<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of that month</date>, in which
I informed him, that the Court of Directors of this Bank,
relying on the assurance of the Colonial Government<pb facs="co_60_34/co_60_34_00266v.jpg"/> "that the
most strenuous exertions will be made during the coming season
to reduce the liabilities of the Government to the Bank," were
willing to allow the rate of interest to continue at twelve per
cent per annum.
</p>
<p>
As this was the point contended for by the Colonial Government,
it is hoped that its concession by the Directors will prove
satisfactory.

(last encl.)</date> to the Manager of the Bank in the Colony says the
Governor has forwarded a copy of the Manager's letter (encl. 2)
to HM's <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice>. It has not been so <choice><abbr>rec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> Our latest dates
from <persName ref="prs:seymour_f"><choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> Seymour</persName> are <date when="1868-05-05">5<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> May</date>—he also says "with a view to
 this <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> being relieved from all<pb facs="co_60_34/co_60_34_00267v.jpg"/> connexion with the Bank of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B.
Columbia</placeName>"—having reference I suppose to <persName ref="prs:seymour_f"><choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> Seymour</persName>'s
application for an advance from the Imperial Treasury.

Yes. I <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> be inclined to say that <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Gov. Seymour</persName>'s threat
had produced its effect.
</ab>

And I think that I <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> inform the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> that these letters
had been <choice><abbr>rec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice>, but that the copy of the letter said in <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Y</persName>'s
letter of <date when="1868-04-07">7 April</date> to have been forwarded to HMG had not been
received.
