I beg to transmit to you the accompanying Extract of a letter
from <persName ref="prs:tolmie_wf">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> W.F. Tolmie</persName> the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName>'s principal Officer
in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> dated <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> <date when="1868-05-28">28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> May 1868</date> in reference
to the title to a lot of land in that Town known as "lot Z,"
which has been the subject of previous correspondence between
the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> and the Company.
</p>
<p>
I also enclose a copy of a letter to <persName ref="prs:tolmie_wf">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Tolmie</persName> dated <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>
<date when="1868-05-27">May 27<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> last</date> from <persName ref="prs:lowenberg">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Lowenberg</persName> the owner of the said lot.

By these documents you will observe that upon the title to "lot
Z" there appears still some doubt in the minds of the Colonial
authorities in <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, although the matter was
understood to have been finally settled by the Secretary of
State as announced in your letter to the Governor of the Company
dated <date when="1865-11-22">November 22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> 1865</date>.
</p>
<p>
I have therefore to request you will move His Grace the <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Duke of
Buckingham and Chandos</persName> to instruct the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British
Columbia</placeName> to withdraw the claim on the part of the Colonial
Government to the land in question.

informed that that decision must be adhered to.

officer of <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>sh<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>should</expan></choice> have told <persName ref="prs:lowenberg">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> L</persName> that his title to Lot Z
<choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>would</expan></choice> be disputed.

Ans<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> <persName ref="prs:wodehouse">Lord Kimberley</persName> that his letter has been sent out to <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Gov
Seymour</persName> for his report &amp; that it is very unfortunate, if <persName ref="prs:lowenberg">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> L.</persName>
considered that he had anything to complain of, that he did not
address the <choice><abbr>Se<choice><abbr>c<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>company</expan></choice></abbr><expan>Secretary</expan></choice> of State through the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice>, as in that case HG
<choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></abbr><expan>would</expan></choice> probably have been able in reply to send out some positive
