Minutes by <persName ref="prs:gairdner">Gairdner</persName>, <persName ref="prs:rogers_f">Rogers</persName>, and <persName ref="prs:adderley_cb">Adderley</persName> agree that <persName ref="prs:denny_d">Denny</persName>’s requests should be denied.

I beg to enclose a letter from <persName ref="prs:hastings_gf">Rear Admiral &amp; Commander in
Chief, the Honorable George Fowler Hastings</persName>, directing me upon
giving up command of Her Majesty's Gun Boat "<name ref="vsl:forward" type="vessel">Forward</name>" to proceed
to England by Mail Steamer, and, in compliance with a request by
His Excellency <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>, to take charge of the Great
Seal of the late <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Colony of Vancouver Island</placeName> and to deliver the
same into the hands of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the
Colonies. I performed this duty and also brought with me a
Dispatch for His Grace the <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Duke of Buckingham</persName> which I delivered
with the Great Seal at the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> in Downing Street.
</p>
<p>
 Having come home by the <name type="vessel">Packet</name> on promotion but not on any <!--Unsure if this is the Nanaimo Packet or the Victoria Packet - IC 2019-->
special <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> duty I am compelled by the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>
regulations<pb facs="co_60_34/co_60_34_00497v.jpg"/> to pay one third of my passage home. Had I been
employed on any special service by that department I should have
been relieved from this charge. I solicit therefore you will be
pleased to direct that some remuneration may be awarded to me
for the safe custody and delivery of the Seal &amp; Despatch herein
mentioned to the Secretary of State. If this request cannot be
complied with may I solicit you will be pleased to recommend the
<orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords of the Admiralty</orgName>, having had a duty to perform, to relieve
me of the one third passage money.

When <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Is<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></placeName> was absorbed in the
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">Colony of B<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi> Columbia</placeName> the Governor was desired to send home the
Seal of the late Colony by hand through some Officer of the Navy
or through some other secure Channel. <persName ref="prs:denny_d">Commander Denny</persName> was
coming home on his promotion &amp; he was entrusted with it by the
Admiral on the station. He now asks some remuneration for the
safe custody and delivery of the seal or if this cannot be
granted that he may be recommended to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> for the
remission of what he paid for his passage home and which he
would not have paid if he had been sent home on <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>
Service. It does not appear that he was put to any special
charges for executing this service and on this ground I suppose
that the <choice><abbr>Se<choice><abbr>c<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>company</expan></choice></abbr><expan>Secretary</expan></choice> of State would decline to comply with either
application.
