I have the honor to enclose you a copy of a letter which I have
brought with me from <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Seymour</persName>, Governor of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>;
in answer to which I requested him, <date when="1867-10-12">October 12<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi></date> and before
leaving, to forward you the necessary documents and particulars
for your perusal.
</p>
<p>
Since then I have visited Canada and <placeName ref="plc:ottawa">Ottawa</placeName>, when I had the
honor in December last to address the two Houses of Parliament
on the Overland question, and confer with the Governor General
and the Canadian Ministers on the subject. I have also visited
the Board of Directors of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName> here in
<placeName ref="plc:london_ontario">London</placeName> at their request, and on Saturday I called on <persName ref="prs:robinson_w">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
Robinson</persName>, one of Your Heads of Department, with whom I had a
long interview, and who advised me to communicate personally
with Your Grace on a subject of such public importance, and also
perhaps with the Commissioners on Emigration.
</p>
<p>
I beg therefore to request of Your Grace the favor of an
audience, and as I am to read a paper at the <orgName ref="org:rgs">Geographical Society</orgName> on Monday <date when="1868-03-09">9<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ins<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></date> where the subject will come more or
less before the public, I take the liberty to mention the
circumstance, in<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">case</fw><pb facs="co_60_34/co_60_34_00537r.jpg"/> case Your Grace should think it desirable to
see me before then.
