<persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Buckingham</persName> confirms that <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Seymour</persName>’s and <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>’s attorney general’s opinions regarding <q>the effect of the Act of Union upon the Legislative Constitution of the Colony</q> are correct and that the Act of Union does not <q>invalidate the Acts of the Council.</q> <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Buckingham</persName> states that the law officers do not need to be consulted concerning the Act of Union’s effect on the legislative constitution of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch
Separate of the <date when="1867-11-28">28th November</date> enclosing a letter from the Attorney
General of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> requesting that the opinion of the Law
Officers of the Crown may be obtained as to the effect of the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Act</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_15/rg7_g8c_15_00033v.jpg"/> Act of
Union upon the Legislative Constitution of the Colony.
</p>
<p>
Your own views upon the subject and those of the Attorney are so
clearly right, and it is so impossible that the supposed construction
should be so set up as to invalidate the Acts of the Council that it
is neither necessary nor advisable to take the <orgName ref="org:law_officers">Law Officers</orgName>' opinion
upon the point raised in the letter of the Attorney General.
