I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No.
156 of the <date when="1867-11-30">30th November</date> enclosing a letter from the Attorney General
of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> in which he urges the necessity of retaining in
the Colony the Deed by which the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> reconveyed
<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> to the Crown.
</p><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">I</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_15/rg7_g8c_15_00037v.jpg"/>
<p>
I am of opinion that it would be advisable that the original
Deed should be retained in the Record Office<!--<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">in</fw><pb facs="co_398_05/co_398_05_00060r.jpg"/>--> in this Country and that
an attested Copy should be kept in the Colonial Archives.
</p>
<p>
An Act can be passed, if your <orgName ref="org:law_officers">Law Officers</orgName> think it necessary,
declaring that the attested Copy shall be conclusive evidence of the
contents of the Deed in any Action at Law or Equity.
