<salute>My Lord,</salute>

<p>
I duly received the <persName ref="prs:grenville_r">Duke of Buckingham</persName>'s Despatch No. 62 of the
<date when="1868-08-15">15<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> August 1868</date>, and caused inquiries to be made as to the
advisability of forwarding<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_60_35/co_60_35_00428v.jpg"/> the Mails from the Mother Country to
this Colony viâ <placeName ref="plc:portland">Portland</placeName> in <placeName ref="plc:oregon_territory">Oregon</placeName>, instead of, as at present,
by way of <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Fancisco</placeName>.

<p>
2. From the result of these inquiries it seems to me desirable
that no change should be made in the existing system. The
Railroad across the continent to <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName> is fast
approaching completion and, as a general<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">rule</fw><pb facs="co_60_35/co_60_35_00429r.jpg"/> rule, Mails sent from
England to <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> viâ <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>, will reach their
destination in less time than if sent viâ <placeName ref="plc:portland">Portland</placeName> in <placeName ref="plc:oregon_territory">Oregon</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
3. It sometimes happens, however, from a want of connection in
the Mail Steamers, that it may be advisable to forward the Mails
from <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> to<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">England</fw><pb facs="co_60_35/co_60_35_00429v.jpg"/> England by way of <placeName ref="plc:portland">Portland</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:salt_lake_city">Salt
Lake City</placeName>. Under such circumstances, the arrangement intimated
in the letter of <date when="1868-07-28">28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> July 1868</date>, from the Post Office
Department at <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington</placeName>, will be adopted, and care will be
taken to label the Mail Bags as pointed out.
