I deeply regret that it is my painful duty to report to Your
Lordship the death of His Excellency <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>.
</p><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">2. On</fw><pb facs="co_60_36/co_60_36_00003v.jpg"/>

2. On the <date when="1869-05-17">17<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of May</date> <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName> left <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> on board
Her Majesty's Ship "<name ref="vsl:sparrowhawk" type="vessel">Sparrowhawk</name>" on an official visit to
<placeName ref="plc:metlakatla">Metlakahtla</placeName> and the Settlements on the North West Coast of
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
3. His Excellency had been in a delicate state of health,
suffering from extreme debility, but no danger was apprehended
by his Medical adviser.
</p>
<p>
4. <placeName ref="plc:nanaimo">Nanaimo</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:bella_coola">Bella<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Coola</fw><pb facs="co_60_36/co_60_36_00004r.jpg"/> Coola</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:bella_bella">Bella Bella</placeName>, and the Missionary
Stations on the <placeName ref="plc:nass_river">Naas River</placeName> and at <placeName ref="plc:metlakatla">Metlakahtla</placeName> had been visited,
and the Governor was on his return to <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> when he was
seized, on the <date when="1869-06-08">8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date>, with an attack of Diarrhea and
expired on the <date when="1869-06-10">10<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date> on board Her Majesty's Ship
"<name ref="vsl:sparrowhawk" type="vessel">Sparrowhawk</name>" at <placeName ref="plc:bella_coola">Bella Coola</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
5. By virtue of <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">Governor Seymour</persName>'s Commission the duties of
Administering<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_60_36/co_60_36_00004v.jpg"/> the Government of the Colony devolve upon the
Senior Member of the Executive Council, and I have therefore, as
Colonial Secretary and Senior Member of the Executive Council,
this day, taken the customary oaths of Office as Administrator
and have assumed the Government of this Colony, pending
Instructions from Her Majesty's Government.

6. The Mail leaves<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">for</fw><pb facs="co_60_36/co_60_36_00005r.jpg"/> for England immediately, but I shall write
more at length by the next Steamer.
