I have the honor to inform Your Lordship of the arrival in Esquimalt Harbour on the 7th Instant, of the French Frigate, "L' Astree," bearing the Flagof of Rear Admiral Cloue, together with the Despatch Vessel "La Mothe Piquet," Captain St. Hilaire.

2. The Admiral called on me the day of his arrival, and on the following day I returned his visit, accompanied by the Colonial and Private Secretaries. On leaving the Ship I was saluted with thirteen guns, which was returned by Her Majesty's Ship "Satellite."

3. I explained to Admiral Cloue that I was unable to receive him at Government House as I had placed the House at the disposal of the late Governor's widow.

4. My relations with the Admiral have been most cordial and friendly. I entertain him and his officers at my own private residence this Evening.

5. The French Men-of-War remain here for anotherweek week and then proceed to visit the Sandwich Islands.
