I transmit in original a letter addressed to the <orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> by
the Colonial Secretary of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, requesting the
payment, out of funds belonging to that Colony, of the sum of
£141.1.3 to the War Department for certain Arms and
Accoutrements, as well as a letter from the Assistant Accountant
General of the <orgName ref="org:war_office">War Office</orgName> on the same subject.
</p>
<p>
The amount standing to the credit of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> in the
Books of this Office is £298, but the contributions to the
Sinking Funds on the Colonial Government<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Loans</fw><pb facs="co_60_37/co_60_37_00087v.jpg"/> Loans are in arrear to
the extent of £6175 whilst a further sum will be required on the
<date when="1869-04-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> prox<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></date> of £4125 for interest and sinking fund.
</p>
<p>
I have the honor to apply for <persName ref="prs:leveson_g">Earl Granville</persName>'s instructions
whether this small claim of £141.1.3 of the War Department
should be settled out of funds in hand, and in the event of no
further remittances reaching this Office before the <date when="18690-04-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> April
proximo</date> whether the <orgName ref="org:ocac">Crown Agents</orgName> are to pay the interest due on
that day from General Balances as<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">an</fw><pb facs="co_60_37/co_60_37_00088r.jpg"/> an advance to the Government
of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>.

I would send this to the Governor stating that if no funds
should arrive in the Country before the <date when="1869-04-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> of April</date> it was
<persName ref="prs:leveson_g">L<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> G</persName>'s intention to apply to <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName> on this occasion for
their authority to sanction this advance from the General funds
in the hands of the Agent General, in order to save the credit
of the Colony. That it was not<pb facs="co_60_37/co_60_37_00089v.jpg"/> impossible that their
L<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">ps</hi> might refuse to sanction such an advance on the
present occasion and that it would not be in his power to
recommend it on any future occasion. That it was also necessary
to take steps for keeping faith with the Creditors of the Colony
in respect to the investments of the Sinking Fund, with respect
to which <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Seymour</persName> has not even thought it necessary to make
any proposal short of paying the whole.

nothing of this, &amp; writing in <date when="1869-03">March</date> we may threaten as to
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;"><date when="1869-10">October</date></hi>, but hardly as to <date when="1869-07">July</date>.
