At the request of <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Thomas Lett Wood</persName>, late Acting Attorney
General of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, I forward to Your Lordship copies
of some correspondence which has passed between that Gentleman
and myself respecting a claim which he regards himself as<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">possessing</fw><pb facs="co_60_38/co_60_38_00537v.jpg"/>
possessing for employment from Her Majesty's Government.
</p>
<p>
2. <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName>'s service was antecedent to my acquaintance with
the Colony, and as it was temporary in its character, I do not
consider it as constituting any very strong claim. <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName>
however is an English Barrister of Education and local position.
But for the Union of the Colonies he might probably have been
confirmed in the appointment of Attorney General of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver
Island</placeName>.<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">And</fw><pb facs="co_60_38/co_60_38_00538r.jpg"/> And under the circumstances of his case Your Lordship
may consider his claim as worthy of some consideration.

I do not think that <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName>s

has any special claims for employment. He was one of the early
settlers in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver</placeName> &amp; practised at the bar in that Colony
where I believe he was not very successful. On the resignation
of <persName ref="prs:cary_gh">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cary</persName> in <date when="1864">1864</date> <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName><pb facs="co_60_38/co_60_38_00539v.jpg"/> was selected provisionally by <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
Kennedy</persName> as Acting Attorney <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice> pending an appointment from
Home—but it was decided not to fill up the Office until the
question of the Union of the Colonies had been decided. At that
time the Assembly refused to vote any Salary for the Att <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice>
but <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName> undertook the duties &amp; I understood at the time
that the mere fact of holding the office of Att <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice> threw more
private practice into his hands.
</ab>
<p>
On the Union of the Colonies
the amount of Work before the newly constructed Legislature was
so heavy that the <choice><abbr>Att.</abbr><expan>Attorney</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice> <persName ref="prs:crease">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crease</persName> applied for
 assistance<pb facs="co_60_38/co_60_38_00540r.jpg"/> &amp; <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName> accepted the position of Solicitor <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice>
for the Session—it being clearly understood that at the close
of the Session his Services would be dispensed with. During
the time he was thus employed he received the full salary of the
Office he had held in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver</placeName> &amp; also an allowance for drawing
Bills. There were many more capable men of the Colonial bar
anxious for the position <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName> held during the Session but he
was selected by <persName ref="prs:seymour_f">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Seymour</persName> on account of his previous service &amp;
as some compensation for the loss of his provisional
appointment. I do not think for a moment that if Union had not
taken place <persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName> would have been recommended for the
 permanent office of Att <choice><abbr>Gen<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">l</hi></abbr><expan>General</expan></choice><pb facs="co_60_38/co_60_38_00540v.jpg"/> of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver</placeName>. At the same time
<persName ref="prs:wood_tl">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Wood</persName> is a painstaking hard working man.
