With reference to my letter of the <date when="1870-09-14">14<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> ultimo</date>, I am directed
by <persName ref="prs:leveson_g">Earl Granville</persName> to transmit to you, to be laid before the <persName ref="prs:wodehouse">Earl
of Kimberley</persName>, a copy of a further despatch from Her Majesty's
Minister at <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington</placeName> in regard to the taking [of] the Census
of the <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">Island of San Juan</placeName>.

I am also to transmit to you a copy of <persName ref="prs:leveson_g">Lord Granville</persName>'s reply to
<persName ref="prs:thornton_e">Sir Edward Thornton</persName>.

not; &amp; no doubt the census although taken will not be included
in the general enumeration of the population of the United
States. The <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">F.O.</orgName> seem to have taken it rather seriously.
