I have the honor to enclose an Extract of a letter from M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
<persName ref="prs:grahame_ja">James A. Grahame</persName> the representative of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>
in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName> dated <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> <date when="1870-09-02">September 2<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi></date>, in which
he points out that a trade in Spirituous liquor is being carried
on all along the North West Coast of British America in
Schooners that clear from the port of <placeName ref="plc:victoria_harbour">Victoria</placeName> and take on board
liquor outside<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_60_42/co_60_42_00304v.jpg"/> the Harbour. <persName ref="prs:grahame_ja">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Grahame</persName> complains that while
the Company pay heavy duties on all the goods imported by them
they receive no assistance from the Colonial Government in
trying to <name type="ip" subtype="group">prevent parties from trading Spirits with the Indians</name>
on the Coast.
</p>
<p>
The Subject is one which the Company have had frequently brought
under their notice, and being satisfied that this illegal
traffic is carried on to a large extent the Committee request
that<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">you</fw><pb facs="co_60_42/co_60_42_00305r.jpg"/> you will have the goodness to move the <persName ref="prs:wodehouse">Earl of Kimberley</persName> to
take such steps as may appear to His Lordship to be necessary to
check, if not effectually to <name type="ip" subtype="group">prevent trade in Spirits with the
Indians</name> on the North West Coast of America. I need not dwell
upon its <name type="ip" subtype="group">demoralizing effects upon the Indians</name>, nor upon the
dangers and difficulties experienced by the Company's officers
in carrying on with them a comparatively unprofitable trade
under such circumstances.
