On the 29th ultimo I received a Telegram from Your Lordship as follows—

I am unable to assent to Phillippo's conditions and must appoint someone else.

After communicationwith with Mr Phillippo I replied by Telegraph on the 1st instant—

Phillippo accepts leaves by next Mail via England quickest route. Asks consideration for future Canadian Pension. Canada not suffering by abeyance of claim. Please acknowledge.

And on the next day I received another Telegram from you, viz—

Telegram received. Phillippo will be appointed.

2. Mr Phillippo therefore will leave for England on his way to British Guiana by the Mail Steamer which takes this Despatch.

3. I have appointed Mr Edward Graham Alston * temporarily to be Attorney General until settled arrangements can be madeunder under the Constitution Act, 1871 when it comes into operation on the Union of the Colony with the Dominion. And I have appointed Mr Henry Slye Mason to act as Registrar of Titles for the short time which will intervene. Both Gentlemen are quite aware of the provisional character oftheir their appointments.
