<p>
I have the honor to transmit to Your Lordship certain
Resolutions purporting to have been passed at "Public Meetings"
held at the Village of "<placeName ref="plc:lillooet">Lilloett</placeName>" and "<placeName ref="plc:lytton">Lytton</placeName>," and places
called "<placeName ref="plc:bonaparte_house">Buonaparte<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">House</fw><pb facs="co_60_44/co_60_44_00077v.jpg"/> House</placeName>" and "<placeName ref="plc:hat_creek_house">Hat Creek House</placeName>" on <placeName ref="plc:bonaparte_river">Buonaparte
River</placeName>, censuring the conduct of the Legislative Council in
respect of the Civil List Act, <date when="1871">1871</date>, and praying that Her
Majesty will not assent to that measure.
</p>
<p>
2. The prominent agents on these occasions were the same
persons <persName ref="prs:humphreys_tb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Humphreys</persName> and <persName ref="prs:mckay_jw">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">c</hi>Kay</persName> who were the leaders at the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">assemblage</fw><pb facs="co_60_44/co_60_44_00078r.jpg"/>
assemblage at <placeName ref="plc:yale">Yale</placeName>, referred to in my Despatch N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 50, of <date when="1871-04-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
April</date>, and the "Meetings," if I may judge from the Reports in
the Newspapers, have consisted of some six or eight persons at
the Drinking Bars of wayside Public Houses.
</p>
<p>
3. Attempts to get up demonstrations of the same kind at <placeName ref="plc:new_westminster">New
Westminster</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:cariboo_region">Cariboo</placeName> failed to obtain any support; and of
Four<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Newspapers</fw><pb facs="co_60_44/co_60_44_00078v.jpg"/> Newspapers published in the Colony, only one "the Victoria
Standard" has opposed the measure. The Editor of that Paper,
<persName ref="prs:de_cosmos">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> De Cosmos</persName>, being the political associate of <persName ref="prs:humphreys_tb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Humphreys</persName>
and M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> <persName ref="prs:mckay_jw">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">c</hi>Kay</persName>.
</p>
<p>
4. I regard the opposition as quite unimportant and even the
endeavour to make political capital for the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">ensuing</fw><pb facs="co_60_44/co_60_44_00079r.jpg"/> ensuing elections in
which it originates will probably be unsuccessful.
