I transmit to you with reference to the correspondence noted in the
margin <!--[no marginalia]--> a copy of a further letter <ref target="#marg1">*</ref> which I have received
from <persName ref="prs:nias_ge">Mr. G.E. Nias</persName> on the subject of the land in dispute between him and
 the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Government</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_18/rg7_g8c_18_00113v.jpg"/> Government of <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B.C.</placeName>
</p>
<p>
I have been communicative with <persName ref="prs:trutch_jw">Mr. Trutch</persName> and <persName ref="prs:phillippo_g">Mr. Phil[l]ippo</persName> on
the matter, which it appears very undesirable to leave in its present
unsettled state and I am inclined to think that if your Government is
not in a condition or is not prepared to terminate <persName ref="prs:nias_ge">Mr. Nias</persName>' occupancy of
the land and he is unable to establish a distinct legal claim to it
under the decision of a court of law<!--<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_398_07/co_398_07_00029v.jpg"/>--><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_18/rg7_g8c_18_00114r.jpg"/> the best course (which I believe
has been already under consideration) would be to offer him a lease of
the land in question for a term of years at a nominal rent in order to
enable him to exhaust the value of improvements he is said to have made
upon it.
</p>
<p>
I enclose for your information a copy of the reply which I have caused to be sent to
<persName ref="prs:nias_ge">Mr. Nias</persName>'s letter<ref target="#marg2">*</ref> and also a copy<ref target="#marg3">*</ref> of<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_18/rg7_g8c_18_00114v.jpg"/> the letter addressed to him on the receipt
of your Despatch No. 145 of the <date when="1870-11-16">16th of November 1870</date>.
