Pelly informs Hawes that he has reviewed the correspondences—to which he provides a reference list—that discuss colonization, a subject of interest to several parties, particularly FitzGerald, who is keen on coal.

The minutes debate the intentions of Pelly's letter; Grey says that he would be glad to review a new HBC plan, one that incorporates the question of coal.

I have looked over the Correspondence I have had wwith Lord Grey & yourself on the subject of Colonizing the part of NA to NoNorthof Lat 49 — You will on reference to your papers find it all, in the following Letters, to the last of which, mine of the 5 March 1847, I have not recdreceived any reply. You no doubt have had more applications on the subject than I have but several parties have been with me particularly Mr Fitzgerald who is quite hot about Coals.

Feby 21 Sir J. Pelly wished some proposition relating to the Colonization of the Id to proceed from this office. This note was merely to refer to the correspondence shewing? that the H.B.CyCompany had desired such a proposition. Whether it does or not I cannot now say. It requires no answer. BH
If the last official letter was from the Co one shdshould now be written to them saying that I think the proposal of a plan had better come from them & that I shdshould be very glad to receive one with reference to the dis=coverydiscovery of coal. X Sir JX see Sir John's F 16 letter. G 21
