<p><persName ref="prs:fitzgerald_je">Fitzgerald</persName> informs <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> of a letter <persName ref="prs:fitzgerald_je">Fitzgerald</persName> requests be put before <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Grey</persName>, as the letter reflects <persName ref="prs:fitzgerald_je">Fitzgerald</persName>'s opinion on the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>'s unworthiness as colonizers of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p>
<p>This file encloses a letter from <persName ref="prs:humphreys_c">Humphreys</persName> to <persName ref="prs:fitzgerald_je">Fitzgerald</persName> that argues against the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> taking possession of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p>
<p>The minutes note that <persName ref="prs:humphreys_c">Humphreys</persName>'s letter, and <persName ref="prs:fitzgerald_je">Fitzgerald</persName>'s opinions are shared elsewhere. <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Grey</persName> feels that the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> should be made aware of these sentiments.</p>

<p>Since I saw you on Saturday I have received a letter of which I
enclose you a copy for the information of <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Earl Grey</persName> respecting the
character of the Hudson's Bay <choice><abbr>Co<hi style="text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>Company</expan></choice> on the N.W. Coast of America.</p>

<p>
The writer was for many years in the service of the <choice><abbr>Co<hi style="text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></abbr><expan>Company</expan></choice> as the
Cap<hi style="text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi> of one of their vessels, but having some independant property
now commands a barque of his own.</p>

<p>His statements fully bear out my own. No one who has taken the
trouble to enquire will give a different opinion.</p>
