Martin writes in response to a request from Merivale, as ordered by Grey, to specify which Colonial Office documents Martin wishes to peruse, on the general subject of the HBC's territorial status on Vancouver Island.

The minutes allow one of Martin's document requests, as the rest are implicated in ongoing HBC negotiations.

This file encloses a draft letter from Merivale to Martin that forwards copies of some papers on the subject of Vancouver Island.

In reply to your letter of the 13th Inst I beg to state that the points on which I seek information refer to the territories & procee-dingsproceedings of the Hudson Bay Compy, — & to the topography, resources & climate of Vancouver's island.

These important subjects are contained I believe in — 1st Letter from Sir JH Pelly to EarlEarl Grey 24 April enclosing report & Appendix on Isbisters Memorial.
