<p>In the minutes, <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">Blackwood</persName> asks if the extracts were for the House of Commons, and <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> refers <persName ref="prs:hawes_b">Hawes</persName> to the <persName ref="prs:cunard_s">Cunard</persName>'s proposal on coal reserves.</p>

<p>With reference to a Precept of the House of Commons dated the <date when="1848-08-16">16<hi style="text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi>
August last</date>, that an humble address be presented to Her Majesty <ref target="#marg1"/>that She
will be graciously pleased to give directions that there be laid before
the House Copies or <ref target="#marg2"/>Extracts of certain Dispatches relative to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island"><choice><orig>Van=<lb/>=couvers</orig><reg>Vancouvers</reg></choice> Island</placeName>,<ref target="#marg3"/> I am commanded by my <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName> to
transmit to you for the information of the <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Earl Grey</persName>, Copies of the Correspondence required, so far as this Department can supply the same.</p>

You will observe that these papers contain a proposal of <persName ref="prs:cunard_s">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cunard</persName>'s that the coal should be reserved to the Crown, which <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">L<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> Grey</persName> said "should be considered" — in point of fact the coal has not been reserved. I merely mention this, but do not suppose it could operate to prevent the printing of these Letters, which are s<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">pecial</hi>ly asked for. They are at the end of this collection.
