<p><persName ref="prs:pelly_jh">Pelly</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Grey</persName> to confirm the receipt of a despatch from <persName ref="prs:blanshard">Blanshard</persName>, and to forward, on behalf the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>, one of the required biennial reports.</p>
<p>In the minutes, <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> comments on the insubstantial and inadequate nature of the report, and suggests that <persName ref="prs:pelly_jh">Pelly</persName> be informed on this front.</p>
<p>Included in the file is a report, fully transcribed, from <persName ref="prs:pelly_jh">Pelly</persName> to <persName ref="prs:grey_hg">Grey</persName>, on land sales on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>; the report lists the names of purchasers. The final document in the file is a letter from <persName ref="prs:pelly_jh">Pelly</persName> to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName>, which acknowledges <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName>'s <q>Note of Saturday.</q></p>

<p>I have received <persName ref="prs:hawes_b">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Under Secretary Hawes</persName>'s letter of the <date when="1851-05-15">15<hi style="text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ult<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></date> transmitting for the information of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> the Copy of a Dispatch from the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>, dated
<date when="1851-02-03">Feb<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi> 3<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> 1851</date>, and requesting that I will<choice><orig> ⎯<lb/></orig><reg/></choice> furnish your Lordship with the Report referred to by <persName ref="prs:blanshard">Governor Blanshard</persName>, <ref target="#marg1"/><ref target="#marg2"/>which by the terms of the Royal Charter the Company are required to make once in every two years at least.</p>

<p>In compliance with your Lordship's request I beg to hand you the accompanying Report.</p>

<p>Lands have been reserved for the Fur Trade Branch of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> near <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Fort Victoria</placeName>, and for the Puget's Sound
<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Agricultural</fw><pb facs="co_305_03/co_305_03_00384v.jpg"/>Agricultural Company at <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt Harbour</placeName>, but as these lands have not yet been surveyed the number of Acres which they contain cannot be stated. Surveyors have been sent out who will ascertain the
exact quantities of these Reserves and in order to obviate any<choice><orig> ⎯<lb/></orig><reg/></choice> inconvenience that might in the <choice><orig>mean-<lb/>-time</orig><reg>meantime</reg></choice> arise from the want of funds for Colonial purposes the Company's Agent was directed about
six months ago to pay over to the Governor of the Colony from time
to time as it may be required, the sum of Four Thousand Pounds.</p>

<p>I beg to add that the <orgName ref="org:psac">Puget Sound Agricultural Company</orgName> sent
out two Bailiffs and seventy four labourers in <date when="1850-11">November last</date> and
twenty labourers last month for the purpose of cultivating their land</p>
