<p><persName ref="prs:addington_hu">Addington</persName> sends <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> a copy of <persName ref="prs:aikin">Aikin</persName>’s report on the <name ref="vsl:thetis" type="vessel">Thetis</name>’ arrival at <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>, by way of <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Haida Gwaii</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p>
<p>The minutes discuss <persName ref="prs:kuper">Kuper</persName>’s account that though minerals exist at <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Haida Gwaii</placeName> <q>in great abundance,</q> there is likely less gold than had been previously estimated.</p>
<p>This file encloses <persName ref="prs:aikin">Aikin</persName>’s report to <persName ref="prs:malmesbury">Malmesbury</persName> on the <name ref="vsl:thetis" type="vessel">Thetis</name>’ arrival at <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>.</p>

<p>
I am directed by the <persName ref="prs:malmesbury">Earl of Malmesbury</persName> to transmit to you, for the
information of Secretary <persName ref="prs:pakington">Sir John Packington [Pakington]</persName>, the
accompanying Copy of a Despatch from Her Majesty's Consul at <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San
Francisco</placeName>, reporting the arrival at that Port of Her Majesty's Ship
"<name ref="vsl:thetis" type="vessel">Thetis</name>," from <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's Islands</placeName>, and giving <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_305_03/co_305_03_00353v.jpg"/>the
substance of information brought by the Commander and Officers of that
Vessel, respecting the existence of Gold in <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">the latter Island</placeName>.

The accounts received from Captain Kuper through the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> do not
corroborate the statement as to "the <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">certainty</hi> of <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">vast quantities</hi>
of gold" existing in <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlottes Island</placeName>. But that gold &amp; other
minerals are to be found there admits now, I believe, of no question. I
should hardly think it is worth while sending this to the Hudson's Bay
Comp<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi>—our usual place of reference.
