<p>
I have the honour to inform you that I have received a letter from
my nephew the <persName ref="prs:staines">Rev. R.J. Staines</persName>, Chaplain of <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's
Island</placeName>, communicating various particulars respecting the discovery of
gold in <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's Island</placeName>, and detailing some transactions of a
questionable character, which he regards as affecting the rights and
interests of the British Crown. His letter is dated <date when="1852-07-06">July 6</date>.
</p>

<p>
<persName ref="prs:staines">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Staines</persName> has forwarded<pb facs="co_305_03/co_305_03_00501v.jpg"/> specimens of the gold by different
hands for the inspection of the British Government. He has corresponded
on the subject with H.B.M. Consul General of the Pacific, having been
previously requested by that functionary to forward all attainable
information respecting <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's Island</placeName> and the adjacent coasts.
He has also been in communication with <persName ref="prs:aikin">H.B.M. Consul</persName> at <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>,
and through him with the British Admiral, who, on receiving the
particulars forwarded, dispatched H.M. Ship <name ref="vsl:thetis" type="vessel">Thetis</name> to <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's
Island</placeName>.
</p>

<p>
Under the impression, however, that his letter to me might possibly
anticipate other communications,<pb facs="co_305_03/co_305_03_00502r.jpg"/> <persName ref="prs:staines">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Staines</persName> suggests the propriety of
my taking measures to lay it before the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName>. Should you be
pleased to forward me any directions upon this subject, I should be
happy to attend to them.
