<p><persName ref="prs:osborne_r">Osborne</persName>, of the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>, writes to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName>, for <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName>’s information, to answer an earlier request for a naval presence at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>; <persName ref="prs:osborne_r">Osborne</persName> relates that <persName ref="prs:moresby">Morseby</persName> intends to send two <q>Ships of War</q> to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">the Island</placeName>.</p>
<p>The minutes ask that <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> be informed of the ships’ intended arrival.</p>
<p>Of the two enclosures, the first is a draft letter, from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to <persName ref="prs:colvile_a">Colvile</persName>, that reports <persName ref="prs:moresby">Morseby</persName>’s intention to despatch two ships of war to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>; the second is a draft reply, from <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, that reiterates the same information.</p>

Having laid before my <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName> your
Letter of the <date when="1853-02-28">28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Feb<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">y</hi></date>, requesting to be informed what measures
have been taken with regard to H.M. Ships visiting <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>;
I am commanded to state, for the information of His Grace The <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of
Newcastle</persName>, that a Copy of your Letter has been sent for the guidance of
<persName ref="prs:moresby">Rear Admiral Moresby</persName> who has intimated his intention <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">of</fw><pb facs="co_305_04/co_305_04_00113v.jpg"/> of sending two
Ships of War to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>.
