I am directed by The <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to acknowledge the receipt
of your letter of the <date when="1853-08-23">23<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> Instant</date>, enclosing copies of a
correspondence received from the Lieut. Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>
on the subject of the plunder and destruction of the American Vessel
"<name ref="vsl:susan_sturges" type="vessel">Susan Sturges</name>" by a party of <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Natives of <placeName ref="plc:haida_gwaii">Queen Charlotte's Island</placeName></name>,
and I am to request that<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">you</fw><pb facs="co_305_04/co_305_04_00197v.jpg"/> you will state to His Grace the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName> that <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Lord Clarendon</persName> entirely approves the measures taken by
the Lieut. Governor with reference to that affair.
