<p><persName ref="prs:colvile_a">Colvile</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName> for him to consider a design for a church proposed for <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>; <persName ref="prs:colvile_a">Colvile</persName> notes that construction-expenses have yet to be determined, and that, given the want of other contractors on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">the Island</placeName>, the church will have to be erected by <q>the servants of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>.</q></p>
<p>In the minutes, <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">Blackwood</persName> notes the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName>’s lack of experience in church design, yet, he approves of the intention, and sites the agreement that the Government inherits <q>the buildings &amp;c</q> from the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>, should the Crown <q>choose to resume possession of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">the Island</placeName>,</q> once the grant to the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> expires.</p>
<p>This file encloses a draft letter, from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to <persName ref="prs:colvile_a">Colvile</persName>, that expresses <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName>'s satisfaction in the intent to construct a church in <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>.</p>

<p>
I have the honour to transmit for your Grace's consideration, a
design for a Church calculated to accommodate about 550 persons which it
is proposed to erect in the district of <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers' Island</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
No estimate of the expense having been forwarded to me, I am not
able to inform your Grace what the building will cost, but as it is
intended that it shall be of wood, and of simple construction, it will
not be very expensive.
</p>
<p>
I am not aware that there is any person on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">the Island</placeName> in a
condition to contract for such a structure, it will therefore in all
probability<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">have</fw><pb facs="co_305_04/co_305_04_00266v.jpg"/>
have to be erected by the servants of the Hudson's Bay
Company, and should you approve of the design I propose to give
directions that every possible economy be observed in its execution.
