<p><persName ref="prs:taylor_r">Taylor</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> to respond to <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName>’s earlier request to be supplied with copies of the <q>Form of Instrument</q> used to to appoint magistrates to <q>Commissions of the Peace,</q> which he supplies, along with related documents.</p>
<p>In the minutes, <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">Blackwood</persName> wonders which of <persName ref="prs:taylor_r">Taylor</persName>’s forwarded documents is the proper one to transmit to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>.</p>
<p>Of the documents included in the file, the first is a draft letter, from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to the Secretary of the Commission of Peace, that requests the correct form used to appoint magistrates in England; the second is a Form of a Commission of a Peace for Counties in England; and the third is another Form of Commission, but for Municipal Boroughs; and the remainder are parchment copies of the Dedimus and two oaths taken by justices of the peace.</p>

The Lord Chancellor's Secretary of Commissions of the Peace having
handed to me your letter of the <date when="1853-08-23">23<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> Instant</date> requesting to be
supplied with a copy of the Form of Instrument appointing Magistrates to
Commissions of the Peace in this Country, I enclose copy of the form of
a Commission of the Peace for Counties, also for Boroughs in England and
Wales, and also the form of Dedimus Potestatem and Oaths used and taken
by County Magistrates on their qualifying—the same oaths are taken by
Borough Magistrates but the Dedimus is not issued for the purpose.
