<p><persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Grey</persName> to confirm the receipt of <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName>’s despatch, which contained a Privy Council order that <q>the export of Gunpowder, Salt petre [potassium nitrate] and Brimstone, Arms and Ammunition Marine Engines and Boilers &amp;c, be not prevented, excepting to the places mentioned in the order.</q></p>
<p>The minutes propose that all future military-related despatches be forwarded to the <q>War Department.</q></p>

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt on the <date when="1854-09-28">28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of
September Instant</date>, of <persName ref="prs:newcastle">the Duke of Newcastle</persName>'s Circular Despatch, of the
<date when="1854-05-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> day of May last</date>, transmitting a copy of an order of the Lords of
Her Majesty's Privy Council, dated <date when="1854-04-24">24<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> April last</date>, directing that
the export of Gunpowder, Salt petre and Brimstone, Arms and Ammunition
Marine Engines and Boilers &amp;c,<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">be</fw><pb facs="co_305_05/co_305_05_00117v.jpg"/> 
be not prevented, excepting to the places
mentioned in the order.

I have in reply to assure you that every exertion on the part of
this Government shall be made to carry that order into effect.

being the converse of one adopted by the War Department.
