<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to forward a copy of <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName>’s despatch, which reports <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName>’s promise to advise <q>the President</q> to work with Britain to <q>determine the Boundary</q> between <q><placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> and the American Continent.</q></p>
<p>The minutes acknowledge the <q>serious character</q> of the <q>boundary question,</q> and ask that <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> and the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> be notified of <q>the intentions of the two [governments]</q> to address the matter.</p>
<p>The first of the three documents included in the file is a cancelled draft reply from <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Grey</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, which advises that <q>measures are in progress</q> between US and British governments to solve the boundary question; the second is a draft letter, cancelled, from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to <persName ref="prs:colvile_a">Colvile</persName>, which sends the same information as the first, but to the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>; the third is a copy <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName>’s letter to <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Clarendon</persName>, which reports on the progress made, through <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName>, on the boundary question.</p>

With reference to your Letters of the <date when="1853-04-11">11<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of April 1853</date>, and
the <date when="1854-02-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of February</date> and <date when="1854-05-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of May last</date>, relative to the
Question of the Line of Boundary between <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> and
the American Continent, I am directed by the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName>
to transmit to you, for the Information of <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Secretary Sir George
Grey</persName>, a Copy of a Despatch from <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Crampton</persName>, Her Majesty's
Minister at Washington, stating<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">that</fw><pb facs="co_305_05/co_305_05_00158v.jpg"/> 
that the United States' Secretary of State had promised to take steps in order that the President might be empowered to make the necessary arrangements for proceeding in concert with Her Majesty's Government to
determine the Boundary in question.

although not acknowledged in this letter
have been sent to the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">F.O.</orgName> [marginal note: Yes. <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">AB<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></persName>], this
question of disputed Boundary has become one of a serious
character. The U.S. Customs offices having forcibly
entered upon one of our Islands to which the U.S. have set up
their pretended claim.

<p>
Send as proposed to the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> &amp; H.B.C. though other means of
settling the matter may have to be taken than are here reported.
